Both the Park Rapids boys and girls golf teams got off to strong starts as both attempt to defend their Northern Pines Conference titles.

Because of the late start to the season, the conference has changed this year's format to four 18-hole rounds that count as eight 9-hole meets instead of six 9-hole meets. The Panthers took advantage of that change by playing well on their home course as the 11 conference teams opened the season Monday at Headwaters Golf Club.

The Park Rapids girls took first in both meets, carding a three-golfer round of 138 on the front side and following with a 157 on the back side. The Park Rapids boys finished second on the front side with a four-golfer score of 175 as Walker-Hackensack-Akeley took first with a 173 before topping the field on the back side with a 173.

Blueberry Pines hosted the second 18-hole conference meet Thursday.
