Tigers hand Drakes first loss of season
Luke DeWulf and Adam Thompson combined on a seven-hitter in leading the Nevis baseball team to a 3-2 win at Blackduck in a battle of undefeated teams Friday.
Blackduck took a 2-0 lead in the second inning before the Tigers responded with three runs in the fourth. Dillon McGee, Shep Davis and Sam Hitchcock scored as Davis had an RBI single and Thompson had a two-run single.
Thompson went 2 for 4, McGee went 2 for 3, and DeWulf and Jack Landquist had doubles to pace Nevis' seven-hit attack.
DeWulf started and allowed two runs on four hits and six walks over 4 ⅓ innings for the win while Thompson picked up the save by allowing three hits over the final 2 ⅔ innings.
The win lifted Nevis to 6-0 in the Northland Conference standings and 8-0 overall while the Drakes fell to 6-1 in the conference and 7-1 overall.
Nevis used a 25-hit attack to rout Red Lake 30-2 in five innings in another conference game Thursday.
The Tigers scored 17 runs in the first inning, eight runs in the second inning and five runs in the fifth inning to end this game early because of the 10-run rule.
Jack DeWulf (4 for 6 with a triple, four runs, five RBI), McGee (4 for 6 with a double, four runs, four RBI), Thompson (3 for 5, five runs), Davis (3 for 3, two runs, three RBI), Tucker Roehl (3 for 5, four RBI), Luke DeWulf (2 for 3 with two doubles, three runs, two RBI), Landquist (2 for 6, three runs, three RBI) and Dan Mistic (2 for 3 with a double, two runs, three RBI) led Nevis' offense.
Mistic, Roehl and Derek Lindow combined to allow two earned runs on two hits and eight walks while striking out 11.
